A 24-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter singing playfully on groovy beats. After originally writing and performing folk music, Dinah’s back with a passion for jazz hip-hop (Mac Miller, Tom Misch) combined with her pop sensibility, resulting in her current sound.

Lyrics:

It started with a noise
A scary little voice
Is somebody rambling inside me?
Is anybody there?
Please say a prayer
I’d like to see you try to reinvent me
And I’ve got to breathe
A lot of things to feel
People might think I’m a little loner
But I’ve got to try
Before we all die
To become just a little bolder

Now I do like you
It’s true
We warm each other
I do like you
I’m new
I found my answer
So why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?
Why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?

Now I’ve got a choice
Writing from my voice
Trying to explain what’s on my mind now
If I ever know life or do things right
Are things that come once you get older
Remember that it’s real
Feeling when you heal
You should always call them and say come over
Don’t be a worried soul with some endless goal
‘Cause people are born to disappoint you

Now I do like you
It’s true
We warm each other
I do like you
I’m new
I found my answer
So why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?
Why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?

Now it’s just a story
Confidence has grown upon me
I know how to be my own
And now that time has passed I can finally run fast
‘Cause I know how to have the best day ever

So why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?
Why did I feel like I hit rock bottom?
Why did I feel like it was all for nothing?

Discuss how you develop your melody.
I usually develop my melody by brainstorming over chords. For ”I’m New” I came up with the chords first, and then I had a melody stuck in my head over and over and built it from there.

Tell us your source of inspiration.
I am most often inspired by happy music and times in my life where I’m having a lot of fun. I love music that is groovy and soulful, especially mixed in with hip-hop. For ”I’m New,” specifically, I was inspired by the whole feel of the song ”BDE” Bonus by Mac Miller, also lyrically.

Tell us the most memorable experience in your music career.
When I released my first single ”Thinking Backwards” I was very pleased with all the positive reviews I received from blogs such as The Wild Honey Pie, It’s All Indie, and The Bops Collective.

Discuss how you build your song.
I start with chords on either guitar or piano, pick some that sound good to my ears, and see if I can create a nice progression. After that, I create melodies and sort the structure.

Tell us how you ensure your music inspires others.
I try to keep it real and keep it as true to myself as possible. If I like it and believe in it, I’m sure someone else will.

Discuss the relevance of promotion to the music business.
Promotion is very relevant as it is hard to stand out amongst the crowd on the Internet nowadays. Artists have to do it all themselves, at least in the beginning.

Tell us what you will do apart from music.
I am trying to do as much of the business side of it myself, as in promoting it online and trying to get it to reach as many people as possible on playlists, blogs, radio stations, etc.

List the names of the instruments you can play.
I can sing, play guitar and piano.

Tell us if you have any music background.
I went to high school in Norway and majored in music, and my main instrument was the guitar. I used to also have singing lessons and guitar lessons in my spare time. I then studied songwriting in Brighton.

Elaborate on melody and rhythm.
My favorite part about writing songs is writing melodies! That is what I always find really fun. I used to only write songs with the help of my guitar, however, for the last few years, I have learned more about using the DAW Logic Pro X which has given me the tools to also focus on the rhythmic side of things.

Tell us your future goals.
My future goals are to release a lot of music and play live with a band. My plan is to release another single and then an EP.

Share your recording experience with us.
I recorded ”I’m New” at home with an Avantone Pro CV-12 microphone, which I think works really well with my voice. The guitar and bass were done by musicians in their home that they sent over to me, and the drums were done by my producer at home. I think he did a very good job of making the drums sound as real as possible.

Tell us the most difficult part of the recording.
Personally, I always find the vocal to be the hardest because it can always sound better in my own ears. I am sure that is a very normal thing for vocalists.

Discuss the greatest mistake you have ever made in your music career.
I once recorded a song with a full band in a studio, only to change my mind completely about what song I wanted to actually record right after, and ended up not using any of it. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Tell us how you build up your composition.
Most of the time I either start with chords on a guitar/piano or I start with a drumbeat on my laptop and go from there.

Discuss the relevance of music.
Music is always fun, and has no age or time limit! I enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy making it. I have really missed going to gigs the last year and am very excited for things to go back to normal, as there is nothing more fun and inspirational as live music.

Elaborate on the song.
I wrote the song a long time ago, and I used to just play it on acoustic guitar at gigs, however, the keys were what really drives the whole song in my opinion so I wanted it to have a bigger arrangement with funky drums and nice harmonies!

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
My artist’s name is my first name combined with my middle name Isabel, shortened to Is.
